Frequently Asked Questions
Undergraduate Students
How can undergraduates get involved in research in the Ghaemmaghami lab?
Please see our lab's procedures and policies regarding undergraduate research and email Dr. Ghaemmaghami if you have any additional questions.
Are there any positions available for undergraduates currently?
Unfortunately, we do not have any openings for undergraduates for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters. But some positions may be available for the Summer 2025 term. If you are interested in opportunities for the Summer 2025 term, please email Dr. Ghaemmaghami.
What qualifications do I need to have to be an undergraduate researcher in the Ghaemmaghami Lab?
We are looking for students who are enthusiastic, curious, hard-working, responsible, and nice. You do not need to have any prior research experience or a specific minimum GPA. Although we are open to accepting students from all majors, we prioritize students who have interests in biochemistry, biological chemistry, molecular biology or cell biology.
I am interested in conducting an independent study (XXX 395/395W course) in the Ghaemmaghami Lab. Is this a possibility?
Typically, students must first join and conduct research in our lab for at least one semester before applying to do an independent study with us. Having some initial experience in our lab allows students to devise projects that are feasible and within our areas of interest. Additional information regarding independent study courses can be found here.
I am interested in applying for a summer research fellowship (e.g. Schwartz Discover grant, etc.) in the Ghaemmaghami Lab. What should I do?
Please email Dr. Ghaemmaghami early in the Spring semester to set up a meeting and discuss this.
I am an external student coming to the University of Rochester as part of a summer REU program and am interested in the Ghaemmaghami Lab. Are you accepting REU students?
Please email Dr. Ghaemmaghami to discuss the possibility of joining the lab as an REU student.
I am not necessarily interested in joining the Ghaemmaghami Lab right now, but I have some questions or would like some advice regarding undergraduate research in general. Can we meet and discuss?
Yes, if you are curious about getting involved in research and have some questions, Dr. Ghaemmaghami is always happy to chat. Email him to set up an appointment.
Graduate Students
I have not yet been accepted to a UR graduate program but am interested in joining the Ghaemmaghami Lab as a PhD student. Are you currently accepting graduate students?
At the University of Rochester, you first must get accepted to a graduate program before joining a lab. Our lab is affiliated with a few different graduate programs including Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biophysics, Structural & Computational Biology and Chemistry (click on each link for details regarding the admission process to each program.) Once accepted to one of these programs, you will conduct research rotations in a few different laboratories before deciding which lab to join for your thesis project. After rotations, if we mutually agree that our lab is a good fit for you, you can potentially join our group. Our lab is accepting graduate students for the upcoming academic year. If you have any additional questions regarding this process, please email Dr. Ghaemmaghami.
I have decided to apply to a graduate program at UR. Can I state that I am interested in the Ghaemmaghami Lab in my application?
Yes! Please look at our recent publications and current projects. If these match your interests, feel free to indicate this in your application.
I am currently a first-year student in a graduate program at UR (e.g. Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, etc.) and am interested in rotating in the Ghaemmaghami Lab. Are you accepting rotation students?
Yes! Please email Dr. Ghaemmaghami to set up a meeting and discuss.
Postdoctoral Fellows
I am interested in a postdoctoral position in the Ghaemmaghami Lab. Are you currently hiring postdocs and are you looking for specific qualifications?
Yes! Our lab is a particularly good environment for postdoctoral researchers who have some experience in mass spectrometry-based proteomics and are interested in applying these skills to biological questions related to protein quality control pathways. If interested, please email Dr. Ghaemmaghami and let's chat.
